When reviewing a project, ask the engineers what they know about the work of other groups in their technical speciality. If someone has better product, why is it better, who is doing the leading work in the field, and what experts have they contacted?
Read the technical journals and send copies of interesting articlese to project members with comments and questions.
At promotion reviews, explore the professional histories of the candidates. Have they given talks, published papers, filed patents, or taught courses?
In promotional announcements, highlight such professional accomplishments as talks, articles and patents.
Celebrate outstanding contributors at a recognition dinner or other special event.
Invite key people to give occasional talks or papers at technical society meetings, and give them special recognition when they do.
Above all, managers set teh professional tone for the organization. If they behave professionally, their people are more likely to do so as well.
